This is a new algebra word problem worksheet, however more word problems can be found in my blogs the week of 6/5-6/12/2011 along with some notes comparing ratio and proportion solutions and algebraic solutions to some word problems. Solutions to those word problems can be found in blogs the week of 5/15-5/22/2011.Solutions to the problems below will be added within the week.
The problems below is an edited copy of my original post. Problem #9 originally had a perimeter for the rectangle that would not have resulted in whole number answers...the perimeter will now yield a whole number answer as I had originally intended.

Welcome to the 2011 Fall session of GED math. I will be putting some new material on my blog this session and will use some lessons from previous blogs.

The first week I handed out a worksheet containing review problems which were covered in ABE math. I will be going over any topics in which students are having difficulties solving problems. Welcome to our summer GED session. I asked two of my cats to put their heads together to help me make this session as productive, and hopefully as fun as possible. As you can see, my cats are brainstorming, but I have a feeling that they are not thinking about math, so I am working hard to put together a curriculum that will not only help my students pass the math portion of the GED but to also gain a solid foundation of math concepts that can be used to start a college program. Understanding concepts in math has a plus side to it...the more you understand concepts, the less you have to memorize.

I have posted the link to the Cobb County School District website where there is a link to the Cobb Adult Ed. website. You can find information about preregistering to take the GED and the dates and times it is offered, as well as what you need to bring with you to sign up to take the GED. The site also has the 2011 -2012 Student Calendar and a link to all the administrator and teacher blogs. You can click on the link to open up the blog. Of course, if you are reading this message, you have obviously figured out how to get here, and you can put it in your 'favorites folder' so you won't have to put in the web address each time. Nearly all my posts are jpg files. If the font is too small to read, you can make it larger by double clicking on it. To further enlarge the size, hold down the control key while pressing the + key until the file is the size you want it to be. To print a post, it is easiest to save it as a jpg file on the computer or a memory stick, and then when you want it to print, most printers will give you the options 'best fit to page' which may be too small to read easily or may fill up the entire page depending on the size of the file, or 'stretch to page' which stretches the post to fill up one entire page no matter what size the file is. Any other non-jpg file should be easy to read and print to a readable size.

3) If you can purchase 3 tomatoes for 89 cents, at this rate how many tomatoes can you buy with $50?

4) A statue in the park cast a twelve foot shadow. If a yardstick is placed next to the statue and it casts a shadow of 18 inches at the same time of day as the shadow of the statue is measured, how tall is the statue?

5) Three people share the grand prize in a raffle in a ratio of 1:3:4. If the person who receives the most money in this relationship gets $ $12,000,000 as his share, how much money does the person who receives the second most amount get? How much was the grand prize? 7) John can fold 3 boxes every 2 minutes. At this rate, if he starts at 11:15 AM and continues folding boxes nonstop until 1:45 PM, takes a 45 minute break before resuming folding boxes, what time can he stop working if he wants to fold a total of 375 boxes.

8) Jill wants to enlarge a photo that is 3” X 5” using a square sheet of photo paper that has an area of 225 square inches. How many times larger can she make the original photo with the same length to width ratio?

9) On a map, the scale shows that 1” represents 80 miles. If you are traveling at an average rate of 45 miles per hour between two cities that are 2.25 inches apart on the map, how long would your trip take?

I was told that if I went to www.kahnacademy.org that I would be able to access his free videos. When I went to that web address, it indeed said kahnacaedmy, however I saw no link to his free videos or anything to do with kahnacademy. Instead the page was filled with 'related searches' that directed you to education sites that wanted money for information. My browser said that it had blocked popups from this site so I enabled popups which only brought up a WalMart advertisement. So I Googled kahnacademy and found the above site on youtube that contained his free videos. You may have to copy the link and paste it in your address bar to access the free site...Good Luck.
Two videos on similar triangles can be found by clicking on geometry. I tried copying the above link and pasting it my address bar...and it worked...it took me to his free videos on youtube. You can also right-click on the address above and click on 'open link'.

Remember.....there will be no classes on Thursday, April 28....It is a teacher workday. I will posting some more algebra, especially solving word problems using algebra...I have previously posted a blog on graphing the equation of a straight line and slope of a straight line. Some GED books that were written in 2002 included subjects such as trig functions and non-linear equations that were in the original drafts of the GED, but were not included in the final addition of the actual GED.

Spring Session 2011 Class Overview

The skill levels of students in the GED level math class vary. For this reason I will vary my instructional methods to fit the needs of various individuals. If several people need instruction on a certain subject, I will be presenting the material on the board and answering questions as they arise.

If you have questions that have not been answered to your satisfaction about the work I present on the board, I will try to help you individually or pair you up with someone in the class who has a good grasp of the subject and is willing to help you. If you know a subject well, explaining it to another student will not only help them, but it will also sharpen your own skills simply because you are having to organize your thoughts on the subject well enough to explain it to someone else.
I also encourage students to ‘brainstorm’ ideas on a subject in small groups. Usually there are few questions in the group that cannot be explained by at least one member of the group. It is also more fun to work in groups because it stimulates you to want to think and participate in the learning process.

There are several other sources available for students, including a Resource Center where you can read and check out instructional materials. The computer lab has several good math programs and access to the internet where there is a wealth of instructional material available. Ask me or/and Mr. Britt for the internet addresses to some of these sites.

I also have a math blog with explanations on nearly all of the math subjects you encounter on the GED. This blog also includes worksheets on many math subjects, as well as a solution page for the worksheets that explain how the problems are solved. You can ask questions or make comments after any page in the blog, and I will answer any questions as soon as possible. You will not immediately see your comment or question on my blog because I unfortunately have to moderate this process to keep less than reputable services from advertising on my site. As soon as I read a comment or question and see that it is a student and not an escort service, I will allow it to be posted on my blog. I also have an e-mail address for students to ask questions, make comments, or advise me that you will be absent from several classes due to unforeseen circumstances. If you know that you are going to miss 3 classes in a row or more than 5 classes during a 10 week session, please advise me or the office of the reason for your absence so you will not be dropped from our classes.
I encourage you to make it to as many classes as possible. I realize that as adult learners, you may have obligations that are necessary or more important than attending class on a particular day. During a 10 week session, we have at most about 30 hours of instructional time for math and 30 hours for Reading and Language Arts. (The Science and Social Studies sections of the GED are mainly reading skills and will be covered in that class.) The class you miss may be the class I taught and answered questions for 90 minutes on the subject that you are having the most problems understanding.

I am looking forward to our Spring Session. Please do not hesitate to ask questions or give me feedback on whether I am helping you hindering your learning process. I am open to any suggestions as to how I can modify or completely change my instructional style to best fit your learning style. Also, I will occasionally make a careless error like copying a problem down wrong. When I do, please correct me…I will be duly impressed that you are paying attention, and the only person I will be upset with is myself.

Do you know how to do calculations on the Casio fx260 solar calculator? Yes….No If you do not own this particular calculator, (The only calculator allowed on the Problem Solving section of the GED) I would strongly urge you to get one and get familiar with its use before testing…You are only given a brief explanation of how to use the calculator before taking the test…You have a better chance of scoring higher on the test if you are already familiar with this calculator’s functions. I will be describing the keyboard functions and demonstrating how to use this calculator during our class…Having your own calculator and practicing how to use it before the day of taking the GED will increase your confidence and decrease your anxiety. It can be purchased at almost any discount dept. store, office supply stores, and here at the GED center for about $10, and you never have to worry about buying batteries….all you need is light to power the solar batteries.

If you do not have the calculator used for the GED...the Casio fx-260 Solar, I would encourage to buy one to practice with before you take the GED. It is sold here at the Adult Ed center, Wal-Mart, almost any office supply store, and other discount stores.
Only a brief explanation of how to use this calculator is given before the test. Practicing using it now and you can increase you math score on the problem solving section of the GED.

I would like to welcome all my new students to my class and encourage my former students to study and practice their math so they can move on to the next level. I am now teaching the GED prep classes for students that are in their last step of their endeavor to pass the math portion of the GED. If you are on the ABE level, the next level after making a 9.0 or higher on the TABE will put you in my class once again. I encourage my former students to re-visit some of the exercises and explanations on my blog and ask questions if needed. I am more than happy to answer any questions asked as a comment in my blog, or any questions asked on my e-mail no matter what level you are on in the process to pass the math section of the GED.
For my new students taking my GED prep class, I will be posting exercises on my blog after we have worked on them in class. I also encourage you to review fractions, decimals, percents, and integers both on my blog and on some of the math sites which I have links to on my blog. 25% of the GED math is Algebra, and 25% is Geometry. I will be concentrating on these areas in the GED prep class as well as making sure that the basic concepts of fractions, decimals, percents, and integers are understood. I already have some algebra and geometry exercises with explanations on my blog, but I will be adding more material in these areas, with a concentration on word problems. My approach to math is not one of memorization, but one of understanding concepts proficiently enough to use them to solve problems you have never seen before.
I am looking forward to helping you accomplish your goal of passing the GED so that you may go further with your education on the college level. If you want to accomplish your goals as much as I want you to, then you should have no problem getting to that level.

Above I have a Satellite view of the Cobb Adult Education Center which shows the paths that the International Space Station will be following on Tues 10/26 and Thurs 10/28. If the weather is clear enough to see the sky, the Space Station only be 12 and 25 degrees off from flying straight over(90deg) the school. It should be visible for approximately 3 minutes on both days. The map shows the direction from which the Space Station will approach and depart. This is a good learning opportunity to explore angles and compass readings. I plan on taking my second period students outside to watch it at 7:52 if it is a clear night.

INTEGERS
Terminology
• Positive integers are to the right of zero on a number line.
• Negative integers are to the left of zero on a number line.
• Zero is neither positive nor negative.
• > means greater than, < means less than
• An integer is larger than a given integer if it is to the right of that integer on a number line. -4 > -5 and 5 > 4. (-4 is greater than -5 and 5 is greater than 4)
• The absolute value of an integer is its distance from zero. Distance is always a positive number. The symbol for absolute value is |#| |-4| is 4 (-4 is 4 units away from zero)… |5| is 5 (5 is 5 units away from zero).
Addition on a number line
Start at the first number given and go in the direction and magnitude of the second number. (You would actually start at zero and go in the direction and magnitude of the first number and that is why the first number can be considered your starting point)
RULE FOR ADDING 2 NUMBERS WITH THE SAME SIGNS (both numbers are either positive numbers or they are both negative numbers) – ADD THE MAGNITUDE OF THE NUMBERS (absolute value of that number) AND KEEP THE SIGN OF BOTH NUMBERS

RULE FOR ADDING 2 NUMBERS WITH THE OPPOSITE SIGNS (adding a positive number to a negative number or adding a negative number to a positive number…addition is commutative which means the order in which the numbers are written does not matter in the valuation of their sum…3 + 4 = 4 + 3 , -2 + (-5) = -5+ (-2) , 5 + (- 3) = -3 + 5
* All integers or numbers are considered to be positive unless they are preceded by a negative sign. If the second number is negative it will usually have a parenthesis around it to avoid the confusion…….. -3 + -4 looks confusing so it is written instead as -3 + (-4)….some books put the negative sign near the top of the number to avoid this confusion…
Most books state the rule for adding 2 integers with opposite signs is to take the absolute value of the two numbers and subtract the smaller number from the larger number, giving the answer the sign of the larger number. This simply means that if you went 7 units in the positive direction and only 5 units in the negative direction (opposite direction of positive) you would end up 2 units on the positive side of the number line. If you go 5 units in the negative direction and then 9 units in the positive direction you would end up 4 units on the positive side of the number line.

Welcome to the start of a new session GED prep. This class is designed to refresh your memory of the math prinicples and procedures that you may have once known, but forgotten for lack of use of them. Some of the math may be new to you, and if you have any questions feel free to ask...that is why I am teaching at the center...I never get tired of answering questions about math...If you feel that I am not reaching your particular learning style, please discuss with me how I can help you to learn and understand a concept or procedure. I will be giving out notes with explantions of the math we will be covering in class....please read these notes and look at the examples before attempting to work the problems in the worksheets that follow these explantions and examples. I am often asked questions that can be answered had a student read the notes and studied the examples. I urge you to keep up with the worksheets and save them in a folder to study later for the TABE and GED. Math requires participation...you can not absorb all the concepts by merely watching me do examples on the board...your participation in working each worksheet to the best of your ability is the only way all the concepts and procedures will remain in the long-term storage of your brain...without working problems on your own and practicing what you learn, you will forget much of math you have learned. In each class I will explain concepts, give examples of problems, and allow you time to practice working some of these problems in class so we can clear up any confusion you may have as to how to work them. There are, however, more problems than can be worked in class alone and the expectation is that you will finish the worksheet at home before the next class period when we will review the solutions to these problems. I will attempt to post on this blog all the notes, examples, and worksheets that we will be doing in class. Also, please be respectful to your classmates and do not carry on personal conversations when I am explaining something to the class. I do encourage, however, that when we are working problems in class that you work together on these problems...check solutions with each other and help someone with a concept if you understand it and they do not....Thank you...Bruce Cohen

Heads Up....Due to budget constraints, we will be testing one week earlier than scheduled...that could leave as few as 5 more class periods....if you are caught up and understand all the material we have covered so far, you should also read and work problems in my previous blogs on decimals and ratios, and if you are going to take a D level TABE, then you should also study percents....percents are not included on the M level test.
